How to check a university yourself
- 1
Check the university and the programme
Entitlement is given per programme and mode. A university listed for an online MBA may not be listed for an online BCA.
- 2
Check the academic year
Your admission session must be covered. JJM shows the years listed for each programme; the current session is 2026-27.
- 3
Rule out fake universities
UGC publishes a list of institutions that are not universities. This checker warns you if a name matches it (notice of February 2026).
Questions answered
What is UGC-DEB?
The Distance Education Bureau of the University Grants Commission. Indian universities need its entitlement to offer degrees in online or open and distance learning (ODL) mode. Degrees from entitled programmes are treated as equivalent to the same degree from a regular programme.
Where does this data come from?
From the official UGC-DEB "Know your Program" list at deb.ugc.ac.in, retrieved on 3 Nov 2026, and UGC's fake universities notice of February 2026. The official websites always have the latest status.
The university I searched for is not listed. What does that mean?
It means the name did not match any university in the list we last retrieved. Try a shorter or different spelling first. If it is still missing, the university may not be entitled for online or distance programmes. Check the official portal and ask the university for its UGC-DEB approval letter.
Are AICTE or NAAC approvals the same as UGC-DEB entitlement?
No. AICTE approves technical programmes and NAAC grades institutional quality. For online and distance degrees from Indian universities, UGC-DEB entitlement is the recognition that decides whether the degree is valid.
