Questions answered

What is a fake university?

An institution that calls itself a university without being set up under a central or state act, or declared a deemed university, as the UGC Act requires. UGC says such institutions cannot award degrees.

Is a degree from a fake university valid?

No. UGC states that degrees from these institutions are not recognised for higher education or employment.

How often does UGC update this list?

UGC updates the notice when it identifies new institutions. This page shows the notice JJM last retrieved; the official UGC website has the latest version.

A university is not on this list. Does that mean it is approved?

Not necessarily. This list only names known fake institutions. For online and distance degrees, also check that the university and programme are entitled by UGC-DEB.
