Learners sometimes lose money and time to institutions that are not allowed to award degrees, or to programmes that a real university is not entitled to offer online. Checking the official lists takes a few minutes and avoids the most common traps.
Two different problems
It helps to separate two risks:
- Fake universities. These are institutions that call themselves universities without being set up under a central or state law, or declared deemed to be universities. UGC publishes a list of them and says they cannot award degrees.
- Real universities, unapproved programmes. A genuine university may advertise an online or distance programme that is not on the UGC-DEB list for that mode or session. The degree may then not be recognised.
Warning signs
Be careful if you see any of these:
- Degree in a few months, or without the usual eligibility or exams.
- Back-dated degrees or "direct" degrees without study.
- Approvals from bodies that do not regulate degrees, or vague claims such as "ISO certified university".
- A different name on the degree from the institution you are paying. UGC does not allow online and distance programmes to be franchised.
- Pressure to pay immediately, such as a discount that ends today.
- Guaranteed jobs or salaries. No programme can promise this.
- No clear fee breakdown, or payment to a personal bank account.
How to check in five minutes
- Look up the institution on UGC's list of fake universities. If it is there, stop.
- Search the university on the official UGC-DEB list, or with the JJM UGC-DEB checker.
- Check that the exact programme, the mode (online or ODL) and your admission session are listed.
- For distance programmes, confirm the study centre is within the area the university is allowed to serve.
- Pay fees only to the university's official account, and keep the receipt.
If you are still unsure
Ask the university for its UGC-DEB entitlement letter for the programme, and match it against the official website. You can also talk to a JJM counsellor. We will check the listing with you for free, even if you do not choose a university through us.
